Frequently asked questions
Everything about tracking your money with Selfinance — the product, plans, and how your data is protected.
Getting started
What Selfinance is and how to set it up.
What is Selfinance?
Selfinance is a personal finance platform that brings your whole financial life into one dashboard — net worth, expenses and budget, investments, emergency fund, and debt. It turns scattered accounts into a single, always-current picture and offers insights to improve your financial health.
I use four different apps to track my money — can Selfinance replace all of them?
Yes. Selfinance tracks everything in one place: incomes, expenses, assets (stocks, crypto, deposits, commodities, real estate, custom assets), liabilities (mortgages, loans, credit cards), and your budget. One dashboard, one subscription.
How do I get started with Selfinance?
Getting started is easy. Sign in with your Google account and go through a short onboarding — just your name and base currency; sensible defaults for expense categories, budget, and your emergency fund are set up for you. Then, in the dashboard, add your assets — crypto, stocks, bonds, and custom assets like real estate or watches — plus any liabilities such as mortgages, and adjust the defaults whenever you like. All calculations are handled automatically from there.
Is there a mobile app?
Selfinance is a fast, responsive web app that works great in any mobile browser — add it to your home screen for an app-like experience, and log expenses on the go in just a few taps.
I already track things in a spreadsheet — can I move over easily?
Yes. Once you're in the dashboard you can add your assets, liabilities, and recurring items at any time. Moving from a spreadsheet usually takes a few minutes to recreate your accounts — and from then on Selfinance keeps everything updated automatically instead of by hand.
Tracking & features
Net worth, assets, budgeting, and the tools that keep them current.
How does Selfinance calculate my net worth?
Net worth is calculated by adding your total assets (investments, savings, emergency fund) and subtracting your liabilities (mortgage, loans, credit cards). It updates automatically as your data changes.
How do I add assets like crypto, stocks, and bonds?
For crypto and stocks, add your holdings on the respective pages — enter the current value and details, and we fetch the latest prices regularly to keep everything up to date. For custom assets like bonds, real estate, or watches, enter the current value, initial value, and any compound-interest details; if compound interest applies, it is calculated automatically.
Can I track liabilities like mortgages or debts?
Yes. Add liabilities such as mortgages, loans, or other debts by entering the current balance, interest rate, and repayment schedule. Selfinance tracks them and factors them into your net worth automatically.
Can I track my investments and asset growth?
Yes, you can track investments across assets like crypto, stocks, and bonds on any plan. Selfinance updates values and calculates asset growth based on market data — crypto prices refresh every 15 minutes, and stocks, commodities, and currencies refresh daily.
How many months of expenses does my emergency fund actually cover right now?
The Emergency Fund feature lets you define a monthly coverage target, then tracks your progress across all asset types — cash, currencies, commodities, deposits — and shows exactly how many months of security you have.
My spending doesn’t fit standard categories. Can I create my own?
Yes. Predefined categories are just suggestions — you can add your own, set whether each is a need, want, or investment, and adjust expected spending limits to match your real life.
I hate manually entering expenses — is there a faster way?
Yes. Connect Selfinance to Claude or ChatGPT (via the open MCP standard) and add expenses by chat — describe what you spent and AI logs and categorizes it for you. Adding an expense in the app itself also takes just a few taps.
Will the AI tell me what to do, or just show me charts?
Connect Claude or ChatGPT and ask. The connector's built-in prompts can review your month, surface budget insights, flag subscriptions worth cancelling, and draft a payday plan — all grounded in your live numbers, never guesses. The charts stay in the dashboard; the advice comes from the AI you already use.
I earn in EUR, save in PLN, and invest in USD. Can Selfinance handle that?
Yes. Selfinance natively supports USD, EUR, PLN, GBP, and CHF with automatic exchange-rate conversion to your base currency. It’s built for multi-currency lives, not as an afterthought.
Should I overpay my mortgage or invest that money instead?
Use the mortgage overpayment simulator to model any scenario — change the monthly amount, see how your payoff date shifts, watch interest costs drop, and compare the outcome against your investment goals.
Can I set a savings goal and see when I’ll actually reach it?
Yes. Define any savings goal, set a monthly contribution amount, and Selfinance simulates exactly when you’ll hit your target based on your current trajectory.
Can I manually add transactions?
Yes, manual tracking is available on every plan, including Base. Add transactions whenever you need to log a cash expense — just open the Transactions tab and add one.
What if I notice incorrect transaction data?
You can edit any transaction by clicking it in your transaction list — change the category, amount, or date, or add notes to keep your financial data accurate.
How often does the dashboard update — will I always see my real picture?
Market data updates automatically on every plan — crypto every 15 minutes; stocks, commodities, and currencies daily — so your net worth and portfolio reflect the latest prices and recent transactions. The Pro plan keeps your full history, while the Base plan keeps 3 months.
Can I track more than one portfolio, or my whole household?
Yes. The Base plan includes one portfolio; Pro removes the limit — create as many as you need to separate personal and household finances, or track distinct goals side by side.
AI & connector
Using Selfinance from ChatGPT, Claude, and Claude Code.
Can I use Selfinance with Claude or ChatGPT?
Yes, on every plan. Connect Selfinance to Claude or ChatGPT with one connector URL (via the open MCP standard) and manage money by chat — add expenses, review your budget, and check your net worth or holdings. Every plan includes a daily AI allowance, with 5× the allowance on Pro.
How do I connect Selfinance to Claude or ChatGPT?
In Claude (claude.ai or Desktop), open Settings → Connectors, choose “Add custom connector”, and paste https://mcp.selfinance.pro/mcp. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Connectors, enable Developer mode, choose “Create”, and paste the same URL. Sign in with Google when prompted. In Claude Code it’s one command: claude mcp add --transport http selfinance https://mcp.selfinance.pro/mcp.
What can a connected AI actually do with my account?
It can read your profile, budget, and portfolio — and, with your approval, manage expenses, income, goals, and holdings (stocks, crypto, other assets, liabilities, and cash pockets). Recording trades and cash moves uses a two-step preview → confirm. Account settings and your plan stay in the Selfinance dashboard.
Can a connected AI move my real money?
No. A connected AI only updates your Selfinance records — it can never touch your bank, broker, or real money. Sensitive actions like recording trades or moving cash between pockets require an explicit preview → confirm step, and you can disconnect anytime from Account settings.
Is connecting an AI like Claude or ChatGPT safe?
Yes. You authorize access yourself by signing in with Google, access tokens are stored hashed, and a connected AI only ever sees your own data. You can revoke every connection anytime from Account settings with “Disconnect all”.
Are there usage limits for the AI connector?
Every plan includes the connector with a daily AI-call allowance — plenty for daily expense capture and regular budget check-ins on Base, and 5× that allowance on Pro. Your current allowance and usage are always visible to your AI via its profile tool.
Plans & billing
Pricing and managing your subscription.
What’s the difference between Base and Pro?
Base ($6/month or $60/year) is built for manual tracking of a single portfolio with 10 items per asset type and 3 months of history. Pro ($9/month or $90/year) removes the limits — unlimited portfolios, 100 items per type, full history — and raises the AI-connector allowance to 5× Base.
How much does Selfinance cost? Is there a free tier?
There’s no free tier. The Base plan is $6/month ($60/year) for manual tracking, and the Pro plan is $9/month ($90/year) and adds unlimited portfolios, full history, and a 5× AI-connector allowance.
Is the AI connector for Claude and ChatGPT extra?
No. The MCP connector is included on every plan. Base includes an everyday daily allowance of AI calls; Pro raises it to 5× — no add-ons, no separate AI subscription.
Can I cancel my subscription at any time?
Yes. Cancel anytime from your account settings. If you cancel, you keep access to your plan’s features until the end of your current billing period.
What happens to my data if I stop paying?
Nothing is deleted. Your account keeps your data, and you get full access back as soon as billing resumes. You can also permanently delete your account and everything in it at any time.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards, PayPal, and Apple Pay. All payments are processed securely through Stripe.
Do you offer refunds?
You can cancel anytime from your account settings and keep access until the end of your billing period — after that, no further charges apply.
